(Pssst…If you still haven’t tried Windows Azure what are you waiting for? Let me give you some encouragement. How about 90 days for free on me. Just go here to learn more.)

If you live in or around Cincinnati I invite you to attend next week’s Windows Azure IaaS Bootcamp. If you aren’t close to Cincinnati find a location closer to you here.

Whether you build apps or support the infrastructure that runs the apps, the cloud can be a really big place. For some, it’s a natural evolution for their application and infrastructure to embrace the power and scale of the cloud. For others, it’s a journey that has to begin with a single step.

Windows Azure provides that first step with a scalable, flexible platform for deploying your applications your way. With our Infrastructure as a Service platform (IaaS) called Windows Azure Virtual Machines, you get the flexibility to choose between Windows and Linux with full control over the operating system configuration and installed software, matched with the portability of Hyper-V disk images. Windows Azure Virtual Machines provide the perfect environment for meeting all of your Infrastructure-as-a-Service needs.

To learn more about our Infrastructure as a Service platform, we invite all developers and IT Professionals to join local Microsoft cloud experts as they introduce you to the Microsoft Cloud Platform, dive deep into Windows Azure Virtual Machines, and help walk you through a hands-on demonstration of the power of IaaS on the Windows Azure platform.

You can register for the event here.

Session Requirements

Be sure to bring a modern laptop that is capable of running the following to make the most of your time at the Bootcamp:

The lab portion of this exercise will require you to connect to the Windows Azure Portal via a modern web browser where you will provision three separate virtual machines in the cloud and configure them each via a Remote Desktop client connection. The lab materials are all online, so no special software is required to install or use them.

If you want to work on other labs while you’re here, you might also want to install the various tools and frameworks that are part of the Windows Azure SDK. Check out various downloads here. Installers are available on that site for Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. Details on system requirements for those SDKs can be found by following that link.

All participants registering for the event will get a FREE 90-day trial of the Windows Azure platform and services, including access to the Virtual Machines preview.

All participants that successfully complete the lab and demonstrate their running application to the instructor will be put into a drawing for some amazing prizes!

Seriously? You still haven’t tried Windows Azure? No worries, I can help you with that! For a free 90 day trial just go here.

I invite you to join me for a one day Windows Azure Kick Start event at Microsoft’s office in Las Colinas on Thursday June 14, 2012.

During this session I’ll show you how to sign up for free time in the cloud, and how to build a typical web application using the same ASP.NET tools and techniques you already use today.

Together we’ll explore web roles, cloud storage, SQL Azure, common scenarios, and even cover what should not be moved to the cloud.

Don’t worry you’ll also have plenty of time for Q&A, so bring your questions.

To find out more information and register go to http://bit.ly/rbakickstart.

I hope to see you there!

Can you build a web, mobile, or cloud app in 24 hours? Prove it!

Developers: caffeinate and get ready to dominate! Bring your laptops, phones, gadgets and dev tools to the That Conference Minneapolis Hackathon for the inaugural 24-hour coding challenge. Develop your own web, mobile and/or cloud app, present it and compete for your share of prizes. Winners will walk away with mad props and cool loot.

And to add even more fun, your city’s reputation is on the line. That Conference is running hackathons across multiple cities to find the best developers. The top two teams from each city will get to compete to win the audience’s vote during That Conference in August.

What to Expect

Competition

The Minneapolis event kicks off on Saturday, June 23rd at The Nerdery and runs through the night until Sunday afternoon. Developers are free to use any technology to build any kind of web, mobile and/or cloud applications they choose. There are no limits on team size, but where’s the fun in going it alone?

Any Technology, Any Platform

Participants do NOT have to be here the full 24 hours, though we certainly encourage it (it’ll be a lot of fun!). We do ask registrants to indicate which times they’ll be at the hackathon so we can plan food, etc.

Judges will be on hand on Sunday afternoon to pick the top 2 teams. Feel free to invite your friends to watch you present.

What to bring

Bring your laptop (and powercord), phones, gadgets and development tools and anything you need to be productive. And your A-game. You’re going to need that.

Space is limited, so RSVP soon!

Food, beverages and refreshments will be provided.

Vote Early, Vote Often

April 24, 2012

I’m looking forward to this year’s Minnesota Developers Conference. As usual I’ve submitted a bunch of session with the hopes that one or two get selected. This year I could use your help. MDC is asking folks to “Like” sessions as a way to gauge interest and influence the selection process. Below is a list of the sessions I submitted for the event. If any of them are of interest to you, please follow the link and like them via Facebook.

Intro to Node.js for .NET Developers
Node.JS is a popular server-side JavaScript framework for handling real-time and distributed data processing. In this session you’ll learn what Node.JS is, how it works under the hood, and what scenarios it’s useful for. You’ll also learn how to deploy it to Windows Azure and manage it inside of IIS 7.

Lap Around Metro
This session will introduce you to Metro, the core feature of the Windows 8 user experience and key for you to understand if you want to build great apps for the next version of Windows. We’ll start this session by looking at the metro design language and framework. From there we’ll dive into one of the most important aspects of metor app, the application lifecyle. We’ll wrap with an overview of the development choices you have to create metro apps and how Visual Studio streamlines the development process.

Windows 8 and Metro for the Web Developer
Are you a web developer interested in building beautiful applications for Windows, but don’t want to have to learn languages like XAML and C#? If you answered yes, then you’re in luck. Windows 8 enables you to create native Metro applications using the languages you love, HTML and Javascript. In this session I’ll show you yow you can use what you already know to build Metro apps. Topics to be covered include: layout, styles, navigation, controls, events, data binding, and much, much more.

Windows 8 and Metro for the WPF/Silverlight Developer
Are you a WPF and/or Silverlight developer who is afraid that all the buzz around HTML5 means there’s no place for your skills in Windows 8? Have no fear! XAML is alive and well in the next version of Windows. In this session we’ll look at how you can use the skills you’ve honed over years of WPF and/or Silverlight development to create great Metro apps for windows 8. Concepts to be covered include: data binding, styles, animations, controls, events, and more.

Windows 8 for the Windows Phone Developer
Are you a Windows Phone developer who loves Metro and would like to migrate your Windows Phone applications to Windows 8? If so, this session is for you. We’ll start by examining the differences between Windows Phone and Windows 8 Metro applications including how Windows Phone APIs map to the new Windows Runtime APIs. From there we’ll look at the steps you should take to prepare your app for porting to Windows 8. We’ll wrap up with some tips and tricks to follow as you go through the migration process.

Windows 8 and Windows Azure, Better Together
This session is all about taking your Windows 8 Metro applications to the next level, to the cloud in fact, by connecting them to Windows Azure. For example, did you know that you can: *Use Windows Azure to easily add authentication and authorization to your applications? *Use Windows Azure to send push notifications to your Windows 8 Metro apps? I’ll show you how to do these things and more in this demo intensive session.

So, please vote early, and vote often! Oh, yeah, I guess a few others have submitted some sessions as well. I supposes, you could check them out here and vote for them as well. Seriously though, go through all the sessions and give the speakers some love.

Thanks for your support!
